iOS 26 is here – but maybe not for your iPhone?

Apple has just released iOS 26 , the next major update to its operating system. With it comes new features, improved performance, and – perhaps most importantly – updated security. But not all iPhones are getting to go along for the ride.

For those of you who have an older model, this may be the signal that it is time to replace it.

But first, why bother with iOS 26?

Apple describes iOS 26 as its most intelligent and secure version yet. But Apple hasn't just polished up the inside. iOS 26 also introduces a brand new visual experience called Liquid Glass.

It's a design that makes the interface more alive, almost as if the screen elements are floating with soft reflections and depth. Personally, I think it gives a very nice and modern feel, especially on the latest iPhone models where the screen really comes into its own.

The great thing is that you don't have to buy a brand new iPhone to experience it - with a used iPhone that supports iOS 26, you get the same updated feel, at a smarter price and with less climate impact.

But the design is only a small part of the update...

Here are some of the biggest news stories with iOS 26:

  • Improved battery health – new overview in Settings that gives more control over charge cycles and battery wear.

  • More privacy – advanced tracking protections in Safari and Mail, plus better control over which apps can use your data.

  • Lock screen widgets – more customization options and faster access to apps and features.

  • Real-time security updates – Apple can now push out minor security fixes in the background without requiring a full iOS update.

  • Improved messaging – smart sorting of notifications, easier finding of old conversations and new features for iMessage.

  • New AI features – smarter Siri, improved text and image recognition, and AI productivity tools. (Requires iPhone 15 Pro or later for full functionality.)

  • Gaming boost – optimized graphics management to maximize gaming performance, especially on iPhone 16 and 17.

Lots of fantastic news, but now to perhaps the most pressing issue..

Which iPhones are supported by iOS 26?

Starting with iOS 26, all models with an A13 chip or newer can install the update. This means that models like the iPhone X can no longer be updated to the latest version of iOS. They will also not receive future security updates or access to new features.

Here is a complete list of all iPhones that support the latest iOS:

  • iPhone SE (2nd generation 2020 and later)

  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max

  • iPhone 12 series (incl. mini and Pro)

  • iPhone 13 series

  • iPhone 14 series

  • iPhone 15 series

  • iPhone 16 series (incl. 16e)

  • iPhone 17 series (incl. iPhone Air)

What does that mean to you?

Continuing to use an iPhone without updates carries certain risks:

No security update – increased risk of intrusions and vulnerabilities.

Apps stop working – Over time, apps will stop working as they start introducing features that require the latest iOS.

No access to new features – e.g. AI features only available on iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

In other words: an older iPhone may feel fast and functional today, but it will gradually become more limited and unsafe to use.

Is it time to change?

At Refurbly, we see that major iOS updates are always a milestone for many users. When a model loses support, it's often the natural point to upgrade – not just for features, but for peace of mind.

Our recommendation: If you are using an older iPhone such as iPhone 8, iPhone XR, XS or XS Max – Start planning your next step.

With us you have two affordable and environmentally friendly options when it's time to upgrade your mobile phone:

  • Used iPhones from iPhone 11 and up that are tested, refurbished and come with a 2-year warranty.

  • Mobile subscription - Opportunity to subscribe to your next iPhone via Refurbly Flex , from just 79 SEK/month.

Summary

  • iOS 26 is supported by iPhone 11 and later (as well as iPhone SE 2nd gen+).

  • iPhone 8, XR, XS and XS Max are losing support and will no longer be updated.

  • For the best security and user experience, it's wise to upgrade if you have an older model. But your old phone won't stop working overnight, so take the time to research what feels right for you and don't hesitate to contact our support if you need advice!
